Coarsening in Solid-Liquid Mixtures (CSLM)

Managed By: NASA

Implementation Partner: ZIN Technologies

Hardware Details

Specifications:

  • Operated in the Microgravity Science Glovebox (MSG)

Sample Processing Unit (SPU) Capabilities:

  • There are 6 Sample Processing Units available to support investigations on ISS in the Microgravity Science Glovebox

Vacuum System

  • Vacuum level of 0.2 Torr is required to achieve the required level of isothermality
  • Vacuum is achieved by attaching the MSG Vacuum Exhaust System (VES) to the SPU

Heating System

  • Isothermal Processor
  • Two disc resistance heaters and one ring resistance heater are utilized to evenly heat the samples to the desired 185°C
  • Four RTDs are installed in the Sample Holder to accurately measure the temp of the samples
  • Over-temperature thermistor is mounted on the Sample Holder so that power can be cut to the heaters if the temperature exceeds 190 °C

Quench System

  • Water quench: the solenoid valve opens allowing air to pressurize the water in the reservoir. The reservoir burst disc opens and allows water flow through the spray nozzles and onto the Sample Holder clamping plates to quickly cool the samples
  • Upmass:  6.5kg per SPU (w/o packing factor)
  • Volume: 0.02 m3 per SPU (w/o packing factor)
  • Power: 48 Watts Peak
