Swing bed canister with heat transfer features

by cfynanon 9 June 2015in Technology Development & Demonstration No comment

A swing bed canister assembly for a regenerative carbon dioxide removal system includes a housing that includes an integrally formed central wall that divides an adsorbing amine bed from a desorbing amine bed. The central wall defines spaces for each of the amine beds so that each portion of the desorbing amine bed is disposed in thermal communication with an adsorbing amine bed to facilitate desorption.

System for detecting and estimating concentrations of gas or liquid analytes

by cfynanon 9 June 2015in Technology Development & Demonstration No comment

A sensor system for detecting and estimating concentrations of various gas or liquid analytes. In an embodiment, the resistances of a set of sensors are measured to provide a set of responses over time where the resistances are indicative of gas or liquid sorption, depending upon the sensors. A concentration vector for the analytes is estimated by satisfying a criterion of goodness using the set of responses. Other embodiments are described and claimed.

Systems and methods for separating a multiphase fluid

by cfynanon 9 June 2015in Physical Sciences No comment

Apparatus and methods for separating a fluid are provided. The apparatus can include a separator and a collector having an internal volume defined at least in part by one or more surfaces narrowing toward a bottom portion of the volume. The separator can include an exit port oriented toward the bottom portion of the volume. The internal volume can receive a fluid expelled from the separator into a flow path in the collector and the flow path can include at least two directional transitions within the collector.

Beverage cup for drinking use in spacecraft or weightless environments

by cfynanon 9 June 2015in Physical Sciences No comment

A beverage cup comprised by an open top and at least one channel defined by a corner with an acute angle so placed that the channel runs along the cup side from the cup bottom to the cup rim. In the absence of significant gravitational force as found in microgravity, weightless or weightlessness of spacecraft or the International Space Station, capillary forces between the beverage and the cup wall allow the beverage to creep along the channel and be in near proximity to the open cup rim. Lips placed at or near the channel at the rim can readily sip, drink, and consume the beverage without the need for a straw and without undue spillage for normal drinking motions including toasting. The channel conducts the beverage via capillary forces from the bottom of the cup to the rim until the beverage has been consumed.

Method for identifying sedimentary bodies from images and its application to mineral exploration

by cfynanon 9 June 2015in Earth Science and Remote Sensing No comment

A method is disclosed for identifying a sediment accumulation from an image of a part of the earth's surface. The method includes identifying a topographic discontinuity from the image. A river which crosses the discontinuity is identified from the image. From the image, paleocourses of the river are identified which diverge from a point where the river crosses the discontinuity. The paleocourses are disposed on a topographically low side of the discontinuity. A smooth surface which emanates from the point is identified. The smooth surface is also disposed on the topographically low side of the point.

Vaccine Development Strategy Using Microgravity Conditions

by cfynanon 9 June 2015in Biology & Biotechnology No comment

Methods are provided herein for producing a vaccine, comprising culturing bacteria in microgravity. In some examples, the method includes culturing bacteria in microgravity, evaluating RNA expression, detecting an RNA that is over- or underexpressed during culture in microgravity, deleting the over- or underexpressed RNA in bacteria, and killing or attenuating the bacteria to produce a vaccine. In other examples, the method comprises culturing bacteria in microgravity, evaluating RNA expression, detecting a RNA that is over- or underexpressed during culture in microgravity, selecting bacteria that over- or underexpress the RNA, culturing the selected bacteria, and killing the bacteria to produce a vaccine. Vaccine compositions produced by the disclosed methods are also contemplated.

Wound dressing and method for controlling severe, life-threatening bleeding

by cfynanon 9 June 2015in Biology & Biotechnology No comment

This invention is directed to advanced hemorrhage control wound dressings, and methods of using a producing same. The subject wound dressing is constructed from a non-mammalian material for control of severe bleeding. The wound dressing is formed of a biomaterial comprising chitosan for controlling severe bleeding. The kind of severe, life-threatening bleeding contemplated by this invention is typically of the type not capable of being stanched when a conventional gauze wound dressing is applied with conventional pressure to the subject wound. The wound dressing being capable of substantially stanching the flow of the severe life-threatening bleeding from the wound by adhering to the wound site, to seal the wound, to accelerate blood clot formation at the wound site, to reinforce clot information at the wound site and prevent bleed out from the wound site, and to substantially prohibit the flow of blood out of the wound site.

Microencapsulation System and Method

by cfynanon 9 June 2015in Biology & Biotechnology No comment

A microencapsulation apparatus is provided which is configured to form co-axial multi-lamellar microcapsules from materials discharged from first and second microsphere dispensers of the apparatus. A method of fabricating and processing microcapsules is also provided which includes forming distinct droplets comprising one or more materials and introducing the droplets directly into a solution bath to form a membrane around the droplets such that a plurality of microcapsules are formed. A microencapsulation system is provided which includes a microcapsule production unit, a fluidized passage for washing and harvesting microcapsules dispensed from the microcapsule production unit and a flow sensor for sizing and counting the microcapsules. In some embodiments, the microencapsulation system may further include a controller configured to simultaneously operate the microcapsule production unit, fluidized passage and flow sensor to process the microcapsules in a continuous manner.
